St. Margarets

The Danish Church

Since the 1960s the number of people who moved from Denmark to the Costa del Sol increased and with it the need of a church, so in 1981 a congregation was founded together with a new priest from Denmark. After 20 years in rented premises the members of the congregation were able to raise enough money to start building their own church.

On Danish Constitution Day 1995, the municipality of Mijas gave us the land to build our church and on All Saints Day 2001 a Bishop from the Church of Denmark came and consecrated our new church, Margrethekirken. The church has space for 110 people which can be increased to 170 seats by opening up the doors to the hall. The funds for construction of the church, in total 400,000 Euros were received from foundations, corporations and as well a large number of individuals.

Margrethekirken is named after Queen Margrethe of Denmark and is part of the National Church of Denmark to which 81% of the Danish population belong.

Margrethekirken receives no financial assistance from the Danish state, but the National Church of Denmark does pay half the salary of the priest.

Our church has 600 registered members, but many more Danish people living on the Costa del Sol participate in the church’s life. The church offers religious services every Sunday, and like all other churches, baptisms, confirmations once a year, weddings and funerals. At the same time the church is a cultural meeting place for Danes, once a month we meet to have lunch together and sing together. We also go to concerts, lectures, films and other events.

We are pleased the municipality of Mijas gave us the opportunity to build our church in Las Lagunas and we can continue our church life here.
